When A Doctor Might Suggest An Endoscopy

Find out why an endoscopy can shed light on what’s going on in your upper GI.

An endoscopy is a helpful tool our gastroenterologist uses to reveal a more detailed look inside the digestive tract. This simple procedure can diagnose and treat certain conditions and symptoms. Our Newport Beach, CA, gastroenterologist Dr. Glenn Madokoro may prescribe an upper or lower endoscopy, depending on the type of symptoms you are experiencing.

What is involved in an endoscopy?

An endoscopy involves painlessly guiding a thin, flexible tube through parts of the digestive tract to examine the health of certain organs and to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. There is a camera at the end of the endoscope, which allows our Newport Beach, CA, gastroenterologist and his team to examine the lining of the gastrointestinal tract thoroughly.

What problems can an endoscopy detect?

An upper endoscopy is inserted into the mouth to look at the esophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestines. An upper endoscopy can detect inflammation, ulcers and tumors (both cancerous and benign). It can also diagnose acid reflux and heartburn.

A lower endoscopy, also known as a colonoscopy, is used to examine the lining of the anus, rectum and colon (lower intestines) to look for signs of bleeding, inflammation, colon polyps and cancerous growths. A routine colonoscopy is recommended for both men and women once they turn 50 to prevent and detect colorectal cancer.
