Preparing for an Endoscopy

As patients get older, there are certain medical tests recommended by doctors for standard care. One of those tests is called an endoscopy and is related to gastrointestinal health. Find out if you may be due for an endoscopy when you visit Dr. Glenn Madokoro at his office in Newport Beach, CA for a checkup.

What Is an Endoscopy?

The entire digestive tract is a system that is 30 feet long and the intestines are 15 feet long. An endoscopy is a procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the expanse of the digestive system without having to use an invasive surgery. The doctor moves a scope with a camera and light through the upper or lower digestive tract to check for any polyps or growths. If something concerning is discovered by the camera, it can be removed or biopsied for further analysis.

How to Prepare for This Procedure

When you have a lower endoscopy (also called a colonoscopy) it’s important that your colon is cleared from waste before the appointment so that your Newport Beach, CA, doctor can get a clear view of the intestinal tract. For an upper or lower endoscopy, it’s important to fast completely for at least eight hours before the procedure and for a colonoscopy, a liquid diet will likely be recommended for a few days in advance. You will also need to stop taking medications for a period before the procedure and take laxatives prescribed by your doctor to help clear the colon.

During and After Your Endoscopy

You will receive anesthesia before the endoscopy to help you relax and in most cases sleep through the procedure. It’s important to bring a trusted person with you to the appointment to help you get home. After the appointment, you should wait a few hours before gradually consuming food and water, and your doctor may recommend that you rest for a couple of days before returning to normal activities.
